How-to Make A Diaper Cake!

Diaper cakes are all the rage. A diaper cake is a "cake" made up of diapers. It's not eaten and thus is zero calories : ). I made this cake for a friend Tami's baby shower last month. It's easy to make - but can be a little time consuming.

Supplies:
One large disposable serving platter
100 diapers size 1 and 2
1 bottle of sparkling apple cider
package of 1/4 inch elastic
couple of rubber bands
couple of straight pins
decorations to decorate diaper cake

Scissors and a hot glue gun will help the process

diaper cake using sparkling ciderThe bottle of sparkling cider is used as an anchor to wrap the diapers around. It's also a fun way for family to celebrate the arrival of the new little baby.

tutorial diaper cakePlace the bottle in the middle of the serving tray. I wrapped diapers around the bottle and secured with a rubber band.

shabby chic diaper cake I kept adding diapers to the circle until I couldn't fit anymore around. The bottom cake layer has 60 diapers (mostly #2 size). I tied the 1/4 inch elastic around the perimeter of the diapers twice to keep them securely in place.

Add a 2ND cake layer of diapers with approximately 28 diapers - these were #1 size diapers. Make the 2ND layer a smaller tier.

Repeat for the top tier. This tier covers the bottle completely and used about 12 (#1 size) diapers. So all together 60 diapers for the bottom layer, 28 diapers for the middle layer and 12 diapers for the top layer = 100 diapers.

Most diaper cakes the diapers are visible behind ribbon that's been wrapped around the perimeter. I decided on this one to cover it in "white icing" which is an inexpensive piece of white fabric. I tucked the fabric in between layers and used a couple of pins to secure in place.

Decorations were added to make it a completely girly diaper cake. I wrapped eyelet lace and ribbon around each tier and secured with a little bit of hot glue. I purchased 2 peachy pink hydrangeas and a set of ballet shoes for the top. A darling pink carriage Christmas ornament is also on the top. The pearl letters were purchased in the dollar section at Michaels. There was no letter "y" so I made one from a "t" - just bent the top apart a little bit. I wish I had better pictures - it was a very pretty cake.

Place the diaper cake on a cake stand and get ready for plenty of oohs and aahs!

Santa Video Message Personalized For Your Child - FREE!

Oh my gosh - this is so COOL!! It's a personalized video message for your child from Santa and guess what? It's FREE. I filled out a simple check list form and made a silly version for my daughter Jamie. From that check list form, a short movie clip is made for your child with Santa personally speaking to your kid from the North Pole.

Upload a photo of your child and when Santa opens a book to check his naughty or nice list your child's photo will appear in his book with also a few extra details.

On the form - you check what state you live in. As you can see, there is a map shown with your child's name and approximate location. It's helpful that Santa knows where you live : )

I checked a box that says my daughter is working on having less tantrums this year (she's 14 ; ) ) Here's what Santa said: "I see here that you've been trying really hard to stop *throwing tantrums* I'm very proud of you. You need to keep it up - as you know nothing gets past Santa".

As I mentioned, this was a silly one I made. I'm having way too much fun with this!! Would you like to make a video for your spouse? There also is a version for adults. View the video I made for my daughter Jamie. To make your own version - go here. Suggestion: If you would like, watch mine first before you make one - you'll get a better idea of what you might like to do. This doesn't take more than 4 or 5 minutes to make - but you will have so much fun making one you'll want to make them for all your family and friends. So beware - this could take hours.

ENJOY! I hope you have as much fun with this as I've had...I'm especially loving this because it's free : )

Cool Mod Toddler Bedroom!

Lauren Liess is an interior designer with a penchant for style. Her blog Pure Style Home featured her two year old sons bedroom. Lauren describes the process: "It was really important to us for our little guy- Christian (2 yrs old)- to have a fun, happy & organized room when he transitioned out of the crib/ nursery to his "big boy bed" & new room this past summer. (And of course it had to be budget-friendly!) It's a TINY space and we decorated it with jungle animals & made a really big deal out of the move and he handled it perfectly. (Straight to bed and slept through the night from the start- wahoo!) Unfortunately I don't have any 'befores' of this room. Basically just picture it empty. With a combination of thrift-store finds, Ikea pieces, some DIY items and a splurge or 2, we got just what we wanted".

Lauren ripped pages from Saggy Baggy Elephant book to frame and make artwork.

Vintage wallpaper lion from romp. The lion stands perfectly "on top of" chalkboard paint - clever.

Fab red vintage hutch picked up at a thrift store ($26). Check out Lauren's blog for more ideas and fabulous photos!

Baby Girl Nursery Complete With Flower Box!

Pink and green is one of my favorite color combos!! Jennifer Pollan created this sweet pink and green nursery for her daughter's nursery. Jennifer said: "We chose Cottontale Star Gazer bedding. We purchased the full bedding set, the toy holder, the light switch cover, and the lamp. The flower box and awning were built and painted pink to make the room pop. The letters hanging on the wall were hand made and painted purple to match the very small amount of purple in the bedding. She loves her room, and we have had many, many comments on it."

Check out the darling awning and flower box....

Thank you Jennifer for sharing. Great job on the nursery - love it!

Sweet And Sophisticated Argyle Nursery!

Repost:
pink green baby nurseryKristin DeMarco from Gifted Notions has done it again! I keep thinking the rooms that she designs couldn't get any better - but they do! I love how the argyle (diagonal checkerboard pattern) makes the sweetness of the nursery more sophisticated. Here's the scoop from Kristin:
This nursery was inspired by the linens and fabrics of the "Kate" Collection by Serena & Lily. The balloon valances and cornices were custom made to tie in the crib linens. The glider is upholstered in Serendipity Pink by Little Castle and the toss pillow was custom made using Serena & Lily Fabrics. The ebony furniture is by Creations. The crib converts to a full size bed so it is a wonderful investment! The pink and green argyle wall became the focal point of the room. The argyle gave the room the perfect mix of sweet and sophisticated. It was crafted by Daniel McIntyre of designs by Daniel. I chose to use black and white portraits over the crib to anchor the dark furnishings. The paint is Light Hearted Pink and Shagreen by Sherman Williams.
